My Approach to Helping
Nakeita Johnson is a licensed professional counselor, having earned a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Richmont Graduate University. For the past 8 years, Nakeita has worked with male youth offenders ages 14-17 years old involved in DeKalb County Juvenile Drug Court. Nakeita has also had the privilege of working with children, adolescents, and adults in community-based, inpatient, and outpatient settings, as well as working with adolescents in DFCS (Division of Family and Children Services) custody and foster care residential settings. Currently, Nakeita provides therapy for adults dealing with unhealthy attachments, depressive and anxious symptoms, stress, low self-esteem, and relationship issues. Nakeita is familiar with the implications and potential setbacks such problems can cause. That’s why Nakeita consistently provides a safe space for her clients to feel heard, understood, supported, and to speak without the fear of being judged. Therefore, Nakeita uses a variety of therapeutic approaches that will produce positive impacts and changes for the client. Nakeita believes in a holistic approach to therapy, which involves exploring the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each client. Nakeita integrates spirituality into psychotherapy by combining the special revelation of God’s word with the general revelation found in the science of psychology. For this reason, in therapy, Nakeita will utilize the findings of psychology that are compatible with scripture. Please note that Nakeita only offers spirituality in therapy upon clients' request. Additionally, Nakeita utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Both of these approaches target examining our thinking, beliefs, and attitudes and how they link to how we behave. This helps in improving how we can regulate our emotions and develop coping strategies to solve current problems. In her free time, Nakeita enjoys watching action and comedy movies and spending quality time with family and friends.
