My Approach to Helping
I have found that one of the most important thing about finding a therapist is that you find someone you click with. If you meet with me and don't feel that connection, I encourage you to keep looking. As a therapist I am a nonjudgmental active listener that meets clients where they are. As human beings we often find ways to cope with problems that at first seem to be good solutions. However, there are times when we find that these “solutions” become problematic and are no longer helpful. These behaviors can also become compulsive and difficult to stop. Some examples of the problematic behaviors I work with are alcohol (and other substances), food, sex, pornography, work, shopping, and video games to name a few. Together we can create individualized treatment plans that utilize different forms of therapy that best suit the issue and the client. DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) can help with emotional regulation, distress tolerance and effective communication. CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) is helpful when we are working on ways to change our thoughts as way to change behavior. As a CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) I can help with problematic use of sexual behavior and pornography as it relates to isolation, self-worth, and relationship problems. In addition, I work with partners of sex addicts that are suffering from Betrayal Trauma that closely mimics the symptoms of PTSD. I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as a trauma modality to help clients working through all types of trauma that is often at the root of our issues. This helps clients separate the facts of traumatic events from the feelings in their bodies and the emotions surrounding the event. As a nurse for over 25 years, I have worked with many patients and families experiencing difficult healthcare issues and outcomes. This part of my career has helped me learn to work with depression, anxiety, stress, grief, and loss. If you are experiencing any of these issues or feel you would like to explore areas in your life that are problematic, please reach out and see if we click.
