Sarasota, FL Mental Health Statistics

Sarasota is home to 56,994 full-time residents. According to a 2015 Community Health Assessment for Sarasota County, increasing numbers of people reported 14 or more days of poor mental health in the previous 30 days. While 7.8% of those who responded felt symptoms of depression during the time they experienced poor mental health, 16.2% experienced anxiety-related symptoms. In addition, 16.2% of people in the Sarasota Community Health Assessment had been told by a professional they had a depressive disorder. The majority of those who reported poor mental health were between ages 18 and 44. 

Much of the mental health data for Sarasota County is compiled by the Florida Department of Health. The department reported that in 2017, 19.4 per 100,000 deaths in Sarasota County were attributed to suicide, a rate that is significantly higher than the rate of 14.1 reported for the state. In addition, more than 1,421 cases of domestic violence were reported in the county during that same time. Of all county residents, 19.1% reported having a physical or mental health issue that prevented them from completing normal, daily activities for 14 days out of any given 30-day period.
