My Approach to Helping

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas. Born the eldest of seven children, I have always felt called to be a helper and healer. I have experience working with adults, adolescents, and children both in individual and group settings. I also have experience working with couples and families. I have worked with members of the military and their families as well. Some clinical issues I have the most experience in include depression, anxiety and stress management, trauma and abuse, and parenting concerns.

My counseling style combines strength-based, cognitive-behavioral, and solution-focused approaches to help individuals achieve their therapeutic goals, along with a focus on building resilience, peace, and wholeness. Everyone has strengths and coping skills that they have learned and used throughout their life. Identifying those strengths and coping skills is an important step to building an individual’s or family’s toolbox that can be used to help work through various issues and to increase resilience in that individual or family.

My ideal client recognizes that they are struggling and is ready to work on those struggles.

Establishing a therapeutic relationship with the person, couple, or family is something I work towards initially, and throughout therapy, as having a good connection is something I believe helps facilitate effective counseling and ultimately provides the best outcomes. As a therapist, I work diligently to meet each individual where they are at, listen actively, and respect where they would like to see themselves in the future with the help of therapy. I am supportive, compassionate, and present with individuals during struggles and achievements, and progress. I believe that it is important to find the root of problems in order for clients to heal fully and to continue to make progress.

The best way for progress to be made is by working collaboratively on treatment goals and through open communication regarding what therapeutic techniques and approaches work best for the person. Collaboration and hard work on both sides of the therapeutic relationship is vitally important to healing. I value each client and empathize with the range of emotions that may be experienced throughout treatment. I believe that everyone has the ability to overcome struggles, both present and past, and heal. Still, I recognize that sometimes having additional support from an objective “outsider” in the form of therapy can allow clients to identify better and use the coping skills and strengths they already possess.

During the first session, clients can expect to discuss what is bringing them to therapy. I like to have clients share what their biggest concerns are verbally and identify which is the most important for them to deal with first. After this, I will explain what they can expect from therapy and talk about the treatment plan, as well as how important it is that they keep in mind that things won't change unless they do the work.
