McKinney is the government seat of Collin County, Texas. It covers 62 square miles. McKinney is named after Collin McKinney, one of the people who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. The city was incorporated in 1849.

The McKinney Police Department (MPD) contributes to good mental health in the city. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) responds to mental health calls that require police intervention. CIT members are trained to interact with and assist McKinney residents who have mental health concerns. CIT also coordinates with third party agencies to ensure residents receive the care they need.
