My Approach to Helping
I am Richard McDonald, and I hold licenses in both mental health counseling and as a clinical addiction specialist. I am also certified in dialectical behavior therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and as a mindfulness trainer.
My approach to therapy is a person-centered approach in which I first focus on establishing rapport with my clients through empathy, being genuine, and an unconditional positive regard for the client. Because my theoretical approach is eclectic, I am able to concentrate on the growth of my client and focus toward self-actualization.
The typical clients that I tend to work with demographically are young and middle-aged adults as well as veterans and professional career-minded individuals.
My communication style is to listen and allow my client to set the tone and direction of their therapy.
I have been in the human service field for at least 30 years where I have worked with many individuals and populations. I have been a licensed addiction specialist and licensed clinical mental health counselor for the past 5 years in which I have applied therapeutic interventions that have helped many of my clients. I enjoy seeing my clients succeed with their issues and in their lives.
I approach goal setting by listening to my client and assisting them with developing goals that are consistent with their issues and values.
The client should expect me to be listening as I assist them with identifying issues through measurement based care and evidenced based therapy.
