My Approach to Helping
I provide a safe, nonjudgmental, and empathetic approach to help you gain peace of mind and a sense of well-being. I care a great deal about you and treat you with the respect and integrity that I would expect from myself. My approach is holistic, taking into account the mind, body, and spiritual connection of each individual. I also believe that we all have the innate capacity to change and grow with the guidance and support of a compassionate therapist.
More Info About My Practice
I have worked as a therapist for over 25 years, and have had the opportunity to work in various settings. This has given me the opportunity to assist people who have been struggling with a wide variety of life's challenges. To name a few, I worked in a residential home with the chronically mentally ill and dually diagnosed population, and a Partial Hospital for alcoholics and drug addicts who were referred by DYFS or probation parole. I also provided services in a few Intensive Outpatient Treatment Centers with people who were addicted and had mental health issues. I was able to see couples, and individuals, and I ran several psychoeducational and process groups. Finally, I worked in an outpatient setting, assisting people with a history of trauma, substance abuse, mood issues, and anxiety. I currently am in Private Practice. My fees are reasonable ($70.00 -$100.00)
Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
My areas of interest are substance abuse disorders and dual diagnoses, trauma, mood disorders, relationship difficulties, family of origin issues, and communication skills. I try to explore your strengths rather than your weaknesses and help you find the innate power to heal and grow. I also explore family of origin issues and intergenerational patterns that keep people stuck. This enables people to better understand why they think and relate to the world as they do, and this process can promote change and healing.
How My Own Struggles Made Me a Better Therapist
I have had my own issues with Mental Illness and have had my own history of trauma. I have worked on myself with the help of therapy and self-empowerment. I believe this has given me empathy, compassion, and as a result, a more effective clinician. This allows me to be a more compassionate and caring clinician and person.
Why Going to Therapy Does Not Mean You are Weak or Flawed
I believe that pursuing therapy or being diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder or having a mental illness has nothing to do with having a weakness. Substance Abuse, in particular, is not a moral issue or a weakness. Addiction is a disease, and with the help of 12 step programs and therapy, you can recover. I do not subscribe to a disease model of Mental Illness, rather I look at how and why these behaviors helped you to cope at an earlier time in your life. Together, we can explore alternative and more constructive patterns of thinking and behavior.
