My Approach to Helping
I have over 15 years of direct experience in the behavioral & mental health and substance abuse fields. I assist individuals in coping with life issues including dual diagnoses, behavioral, mental health, substance abuse, relationships, personal conflicts, sexual issues, problem-solving, decision-making, and developmental concerns using an eclectic approach supported by evidence-based research.
I use an eclectic approach tailored specifically to the client's needs. The approaches include Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Solution-Focused, Multisystemic, and Person-Centered therapies.
I provide counseling services to adolescents and adults to address a variety of topics (trauma, substance abuse, peer pressure, mental health issues, anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, trauma, etc). With couples and families, the focus consists of relationship issues, communication issues, problem resolution, and familial dynamics. I also provide counseling to children via art and play therapy to address grief, behavioral issues, and trauma.
I truly enjoy helping others and understand that therapy can be uncomfortable and difficult for some clients. I strive to build a rapport with clients to ease the process using an approach that is respectful and nonjudgmental. My goal is to work collaboratively with clients to design an individualized treatment plan to meet their goals.
I fell into the counseling field after taking a substance abuse class and became a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. After a few months, I recognized the need to address both substance abuse and mental health issues which prompted me to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. A huge part of what drives me to work in this field is my name Sandra – which means helper of man or protector of humanity. Who knew?
Goals are client-driven and supported by their therapist. I encourage and guide clients in identifying realistic and achievable goals.
The initial session will consist of us getting to know one another by sharing relevant background information and obtaining a sense of comfortability to ensure a therapeutic alliance. Next, we will review symptoms and changes in behaviors to help identify the presenting concern in order to determine how to proceed by identifying a treatment modality.
