San Luis Obispo is the government seat of San Luis Obispo County, California. The city has a land area of 13 square miles. San Luis Obispo is situated along the San Luis Obispo Creek at the foot of the Santa Lucia Mountains. The city was incorporated in 1856.

San Luis Obispo has a population of 48,000 people. From 2010 to 2016, the number of residents increased by 5%. The racial composition of San Luis Obispo is 73% white, 17% Hispanic, 5% Asian, and 2% black. The median age in the city is 26 years old. 

Foreign-born people make up 9% of the population (compared to 27% of people state-wide). Seventeen percent of residents speak a foreign language at home. The city has 5,300 Spanish speakers and 500 Chinese speakers.
