My Approach to Helping
My name is Shannon Schell and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. I have experience working with a variety of emotional and behavioral issues that span from therapy for depression and anxiety to relationship issues and couples counseling and much more. My goal is to partner with you and help you achieve the personal growth you are striving for. I mainly use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in my work. CBT focuses on the thoughts and how the thoughts impact the emotions and behaviors that follow. The idea behind CBT is to challenge underlying thoughts and beliefs while replacing these with more realistic ways of thinking. Essentially, if we are able to make change in our thoughts, this will have a positive impact on the emotions and actions that follow.
I meet with individuals and couples ages 18 years and up. I am most comfortable working with individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief, trauma, stress management, codependency, workcareer related issues, self-esteem issues and life transitions. I also provide couples counseling and help my couples with communication, fair fighting, and strengthening the bond. I am committed to providing a safe, supportive environment that will serve as a foundation for inner healing. The active listening, empathy and feedback that are part of the therapy process can help reduce feelings of isolation and lead to meaningful change.
I have always loved listening and learning about the lives of others around me. I understand that you are in a vulnerable place the first time you meet me, yet, you are willing and open to sharing your current circumstances and entrusting me to help you with your journey. Encouraging, empowering, and inspiring you to grow and heal is a true privilege for me. I partner with my clients to help them set goals according to the personal growth they are striving for. Throughout our sessions, we will do progress checks related to the goals that were set during the counseling session. When needed, we will modify, refine, or add goals to the treatment plan as well.
During the first session, I ask a variety of background questions related to current stressors, health concerns, and precipitating events that are bringing you to therapy. We end the session with collaboratively setting goals that will be worked on in future sessions. I also end the session with assigning homework that will aid and promote self-reflection between the times that we meet.
