My Approach to Helping
My passion is providing treatment for individuals, couples, and families struggling with anxiety, depression, PPD, bipolar disorders, and relationship issues. My approach to therapy is a combination of person-centered and holistic modalities. With a background in fitness and health, I believe in addressing both mental health and physical health issues as they are so very intertwined. My goal as your therapist is to cultivate a relationship in which you feel accepted, validated, and safe to work through problems. From my perspective, YOU are the expert on your own life, and I'm here to help-- not judge. However, this doesn't mean I won't hold you accountable and challenge you to reach your goals! I like to make therapy as enjoyable and interactive as possible and not something you dread each week. It gives me great joy to help people gain understanding of themselves and get through pivotal moments in life. I hope to empower you and support you throughout your therapy journey!
My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy
If you have never been to therapy, you might assume that counseling means going into an office for a professional to "fix" you or your issues. However, it's much more complex than that, so don't believe everything you see on TV and movies. On average, my clients spend one hour a week in my office, then they return to their environment (home, work, school, relationships) that are often the source or contributing factor to their mental health issues. My goal in therapy is to equip my clients with the knowledge and skills to tackle any problem that they encounter in life, make significant changes, and maintain their own mental health even long after therapy stops.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I love being a therapist because I am in a unique position to connect and help people on a very personal level. When I see my clients make progress, break habits, and create healthier patterns I know that this is exactly what I am supposed to be doing. I enjoy giving people the empathy and understanding they may have never received from their friends or family and creating a safe space for their personal growth.
Had a Negative Therapy Experience?
Many clients have come into my office very closed off to the idea of participating in therapy due to mistakes their past therapists have made. From breaking confidentiality, blowing clients off, or being straight up hateful, it breaks my heart each time I hear a story like this. I like to tell people that finding the right therapist is like shopping for a pair of shoes. You have to try on a few pairs to figure out what suits your needs and personality best. So, if you are like so many others that have tried therapy once or twice and had negative experiences, I am here to reassure you that not all therapists are the same. Most of us love what we do, and I would personally love the opportunity to help heal those wounds.
