My Approach to Helping
Sometimes we find ourselves at a crossroads, stuck, not sure of which way to turn or even how we got there. Exploring those stuck points with someone who creates a safe environment for you to get to know yourself better, and grow towards emotional intelligence, happiness, and peace of mind can be the life transformation you are seeking. I have been a licensed clinical social worker for over 25 years. My work has been with those struggling with a vast array of stress-related mental health issues including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and bipolar. I have specialized in addictions and their impact on families, including gambling. I have worked with individuals of all ages and backgrounds in private practice and telehealth. In the last 10 years, I have specialized in working with veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress (PTSD) at Active Duty and VA hospitals, including emergency rooms. Other specialties include working with those currently suffering or who have suffered through an emotionally abusive relationship. The emotional effects of partner violence can be devastating, and the scars of mental cruelty long-lasting. One can be in an abusive relationship without it ever becoming physical; it can even feel like you're living in an episode of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On one hand, your partner can be kind, warm, and otherwise normal. Then, suddenly, you are the cause of their every problem, being controlled by shame and guilt. Escalating put-downs, and increasing anger at your every move, with your requests being turned against you, are not signs “you are the crazy one”. I can help you find the skills needed to navigate your way back to a life of sanity and find the strength to decide what is best for you. I utilize a holistic therapeutic approach, with many clients finding the most success with weekly 45-minute psychotherapy sessions, providing relevant skill sets to practice throughout the week, options of weekly podcasts or specialized readings, and having access to obtain daily feedback if needed. These are all offered with my service through BetterHelp. I have a strong background in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness. Providing you with an understanding of how the brain processes information and how the body stores stress is important to your healing. I also have experience using dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), prolonged exposure, and other solution-focused therapies. I am certified in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy utilizing energy work combined with horse body language for in-person learning.
