About Burbank

Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located in the San Fernando Valley and has a land area of 17 square miles. The city is named after David Burbank, a dentist who built a sheep ranch in the area in 1867.

Burbank is inhabited by 104,000 people. Thirty-four percent of the city’s residents are foreign-born, and 47% speak a foreign language at home. The racial composition of the population is 56% white, 26% Hispanic, 11% Asian, and 2% black. Burbank is home to more than 19,400 Spanish speakers, 11,900 Armenian speakers, and 2,900 Tagalog speakers.

In Burbank, 40% of residents over the age of 25 have earned a bachelor’s degree. The median household income is $67,300. Over 11% of residents live below the poverty line.

Many major media companies such as ABC, Disney, Cartoon Network, Yahoo!, and Nickelodeon Animation are located in Burbank. This had led to Burbank being called the “Media Capital of the World.”

Mental Health in Burbank

Suicide is a major concern in Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports 779 residents died by suicide in 2013. That figure is noticeably higher than the number of murders that year (564). The Burbank Unified School District is working with the Family Service Agency (FSA) of Burbank to improve mental health in schools. The Burbank and John Burroughs high schools have wellness centers where students may receive mental health counseling. The FSA provides counselors to staff the centers. During the 2016-2017 school year, 628 students made 1,992 visits to the Burbank High wellness center.
