My Approach to Helping
My 35 years' experience as a licensed professional and my doctoral education combine to result in top-drawer services and positive results. I offer compassionate and focused therapy services for individuals, couples, families, tweens and teens. I am a results-oriented therapist who has worked with clients from all walks of life. I have specialized skills in treating disorders of childhood and adolescence as well as mood disorders. I get very good and generally rapid results using imagery and biofeedback in the treatment of anxiety. I am highly experienced and skilled in family and marital therapy. My toolkit includes memorable and easy to use communication tweaks which usually result in rapid control of communication problems which seem to underly so many interpersonal problems. I am very effective with behavioral techniques with children and adults. I have a long history of tight collaboration with psychiatrists and physicians in service of providing a more comprehensive form of treatment for those who take medications and or have medical disorders.

Specific Issue(s) I'm Skilled at Helping With
I provide biofeedback-enhanced guided imagery and solution-focused cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of anxiety. I have much experience in couple's counseling and get good results by focusing on communication and teaching people how to get their needs met. My personal and job experiences give me a solid foundation from which to help others navigate challenges at home, school, and the workplace. I am extensively trained in behavior therapy and parenting skills training. I have worked with teens in nonpublic school settings for over 22 years and have a good working knowledge of IEP's, 504 plans, and associated accommodations.
My View on the Purpose of Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy can be essential for one to get objective feedback and to review and explore one's ideas, feelings, and behaviors. It is a process which can facilitate rehabilitation, renewal, and positive change. It should be a process of empowerment. It can also be a catalyst for personal transformation and renewal. I believe that most therapy episodes can be brief if the therapist focuses upon giving clients useful tools and "antidotes" for poisonous ideasbeliefs.
What I Love about Being a Psychotherapist
I really enjoy helping others and seeing them become happier, more confident, and competent. I have seen people rise from the ashes of disaster and really shine with a bit of a helping hand. Therapy can make the difference between misery and success.
My Role as a Therapist
I see myself as an advocate for the inner therapist in every person-that part of them that is seeking to become better, more effective, and happy. I often work as an objective mediator of conflictual ideas between and within individuals. I work to instill coping skills and ideasbeliefs in people that remain after treatment as a "therapist on your shoulder" or perhaps your better self who reminds you about the "right path" to take. Many of my clients report that they make better decisions or steer away from distressing feelings when they think "What would Tim say?"
