Widely known as rehab centers, residential treatment centers aim to provide needed assistance to people seeking addiction recovery and those experiencing adverse mental health issues. Residential treatment is available around the clock and is administered by trained health care personnel. Inpatient and outpatient rehab services are provided by these mental health facilities.
While rehab centers are known for their effectiveness in ameliorating drug and alcohol abuse, they also serve as excellent therapeutic resources for people with mental health and behavioral challenges. There are a variety of rehab centers that treat conditions such as substance dependency, compulsive gambling, and anxiety issues, and many treatment centers specialize in specific mental health issues, like depression or disordered eating. Depression treatment centers, for example, focus on personalized health care and psychoeducation about the condition. Residents also benefit from interactions with other residents who are going through similar mental health issues.
According to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, the state of Alabama was ranked 47th out of 50 states in terms of overall well-being for the year 2013. This ranking is two places lower than the 45th place ranking the state occupied in the year 2012. Specific evaluations of emotional health and healthy behaviors in 2013 saw the state ranked 40th and 42nd in these respective areas.
These results are consistent with data obtained from Mental Health America’s (MHA) 2014 survey which investigated the mental health of American citizens across the entire country. According to MHA scores, Alabama has an overall ranking of 39th among all the states, indicating a high prevalence of mental health issues and low rates of access to mental health care. In fact, the state is ranked at number 49 for access to mental health care, and the state comes in last for mental health workforce availability.
The MHA survey estimates that 46% of children in need of mental health care services did not receive those services in Alabama. Among adult residents, though, only 17% of adults with severe mental health conditions reported unmet needs in Alabama, and just 7% of adult residents demonstrated drug and alcohol abuse or dependence. Similarly, less than 6% of Alabama youth abuse or display a dependence on alcohol or illicit drugs.
According to 2013 estimates, the number of Alabama residents is just under 5 million people. Females make up almost 52% of the population, and seniors account for almost 15%. Almost 390,000 residents are military veterans. The median household income amounts to $43,000 and nearly 19% of residents live below the poverty line.
