Residential treatment centers—simply called rehab centers by many people—help individuals of all ages with a wide range of persistent mental health conditions. Many of these facilities are live-in, inpatient treatment centers staffed by trained mental health care personnel who provide 24-hour supervision and support. Residents benefit from being immersed in working toward healing and recovery, away from routine life and everyday stressors. Long-term and short-term residential treatment is offered, and sometimes outpatient services are available as well.
Although a number of these kinds of facilities are used to treat drug and alcohol addictions, there are many others that specialize in the treatment of specific conditions ranging from disordered eating to bipolar. Children and adolescents, too, who have behavioral and emotional concerns can access effective treatment at specialized centers.
Hallmarks of an effective program include:
The 2013 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index ranked Maryland 18th for overall well-being. Mental Health America's (MHA) 2014 Parity or Disparity report, which compares mental health care systems across all states, gave Maryland an overall ranking of 7 suggesting a low prevalence of mental health issues as well as easy access to mental health care. Maryland was 4th in adult rankings and 20th in youth rankings. The state was 2nd in the need rankings, indicating a low prevalence of reported behavioral and mental health concerns.
Treatment sometimes requires a person to relocate permanently or temporarily. If that's the case for you, learning more about the state's population can be helpful. Currently, the number of people living in the state totals just under 6 million people. Young people under the age of 18 account for 23% of the population, and 13% of residents are 65 or older. Females make up 52% of the population. Roughly 61% of all residents are white, 30% are black, and 6% are Asian. Maryland's median household income of $73,500 falls well above the national average of $53,000.
