Rehab, otherwise known as residential treatment, provides intensive inpatient treatment for people facing behavioral and mental health concerns. Sometimes stepping out of the familiar and immersing oneself in healing and recovery is essential to creating positive, lasting change. Every treatment program will be different, and finding the right facility will depend on a person's specific needs and interests. The issues treated through residential programs vary widely and can include drug and alcohol addiction, compulsive gambling, sex addiction, posttraumatic stress, and depression.
Although each program is different, many of the core therapeutic techniques are the same. Residents can expect to engage in individual counseling and group counseling, for example. Through therapy, people are able to explore their thoughts and feelings in a safe setting and address topics such as family, past experiences, and possible triggers for unhealthy behavior. Group therapy provides residents with the opportunity to interact and develop rapport with fellow residents who may be experiencing similar issues. Residents can also benefit from extracurricular activities that support their well-being and build self-esteem and new skills, such as journal writing, painting, or horseback riding.
According to the 2013 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, Oklahoma is rated as the 42nd state for overall well-being. Measures from the index indicate that Oklahoma scored in the fifth quintile in four of the six individual categories: 43rd in basic access, 44th in physical health, 47th in life evaluation, and 48th in healthy behaviors. The state was ranked 39th in emotional health.
After evaluating the District of Columbia and all 50 states across 15 mental health care measures, the 2014 Mental Health America (MHA) survey ranked Oklahoma 45th overall, suggesting a high prevalence of mental health issues and low rates of access to mental health care programs. Oklahoma has the second highest percentage of adults reporting mental health issues—almost 22%—of all American states. Nearly 10% of adults show dependence on alcohol or illicit drugs.
Oklahoma is home to just under 4 million people. About 25% of all residents are minors, and people aged 65 or older make up over 14% of the population. Approximately 75% of the population identifies as white, 9% as Alaska Native or American Indian, 8% as black, and 2% as Asian. Of all residents aged 25 years or older, 24% have achieved a bachelor's degree or more. Currently, 17% of people are living in poverty within the state.
