Residential treatment facilities offer 24/7 mental health and substance abuse care. In recent years, the Affordable Care Act—better known as Obamacare—required insurance carriers to cover mental health treatment. In many cases, this can include all or portions of residential care.

A 2013 survey by the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation found that 26% of South Dakota's residents struggle with "poor mental health." The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that 125 residents die annually from suicide, and about 10% of South Dakota adults struggle with substance abuse.
According to Mental Health America's Parity or Disparity: The State of Mental Health in America, South Dakota ranks 9th among all states in terms of mental health care access and quality. On most measures of mental health, the state is ranked somewhere in the middle, with neither a high nor low rate of mental health concerns among adults. The state spends just $74 per capita on mental health services.
South Dakota has the second-highest rate of behavioral, emotional, and developmental issues among children in the country. People who identify as black make up 1.9% of the population, American Indian and Alaska Natives making up 8.9%, and Latinos are 3.4% of the South Dakota population. Almost 25% of residents are minors, and more than 90% of adults in the state graduated from high school. Fourteen percent of state residents live below the poverty line with the median income amounting to $49,500.
