Residential treatment centers—usually referred to as rehab centers—in Washington are an important part of the state’s mental health care services. These facilities are designed to provide support for people experiencing various physical and mental health conditions. They are staffed by professional health care providers and offer 24-hour therapeutic service. Drug rehab and alcohol rehab centers, for example, are fully equipped to help people in need of addiction treatment and help residents heal by removing them from life’s daily stressors and routines.
Not only are rehab centers effective in treating drug and alcohol abuse, they also provide excellent support for residents who are experiencing various mental health and behavioral issues. People experiencing depression, for example, can access depression treatment centers where they are given personalized care and often learn more about their conditions by interacting with fellow residents experiencing similar mental health conditions. There are many types of rehab centers available to treat issues such as substance abuse, gambling addiction, and bipolar issues.
Various mental health services are available to residents of Washington including private practice therapists; residential treatment centers offering inpatient and outpatient alcohol and drug rehab, eating disorder treatment, and treatment for behavioral issues; and state-funded mental health services.
Mental Health America's (MHA) recent report titled Parity or Disparity: The State of Mental Health in America 2015 indicates that Washington State currently has a high prevalence of mental health issues coupled with low rates of access to needed care. Based on MHA scores, Washington is one of only five American states that rank poorly across both adult and youth age groups, with Washington receiving an overall ranking of 48 out of the 50 American states and the District of Columbia.
Approximately 21% of adults in Washington have reported experiencing a mental health issue. This figure translates to more than 1 million people. MHA estimates that among all adult residents of Washington state, 9.5% are alcohol or drug dependent and 4.3% have serious thoughts of suicide.
Having available and accessible mental health services for children in need can greatly reduce the likelihood of young people dropping out of school, using illicit substances, or engaging in self-harming behavior. The MHA report states that among Washington residents under the age of 18, roughly 10% display emotional behavioral developmental issues, 7% use alcohol or illicit drugs, and 10.6% have experienced at least one major depressive episode.
In 2013, almost 7 million people resided in the state of Washington, amounting to approximately 2% of the entire U.S. population. Roughly 23% of the state’s inhabitants are under 18 years of age, and 14% are over the age of 65. Of all people aged 25 years or older, 90% graduated from high school, and 32% have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher.
