The COVID-19 pandemic has presented extraordinary demands on mental health providers. This has created a perfect storm for therapist burnout, vicarious trauma, and countertransference reactions. Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Richard Schwartz, PhD, is a non-pathologizing, evidenced-based approach to psychotherapy that can be used by therapists to support self-care.
In this 2-hour continuing education webinar, Dr. Fatter will review the basic model of IFS, its theoretical assumptions, its view of the therapeutic relationship, and the goals for IFS treatment. Dr. Fatter will apply an IFS framework to invite therapists to work with our own parts to explore the three types of parts in IFS. This webinar will include case examples of therapists’ inner systems to describe the process of applying IFS to our own systems for self-care. Dr. Fatter will guide several experiential exercises to demonstrate one of the most important first steps in the IFS model. Guided experientials will invite clinicians to have increased awareness of their own “helper” and “therapist” parts for our own self-care and burnout prevention.
