Empowering Practice With Youth: Effectively Supporting Young People in Therapy

This interactive presentation offers counseling practitioners theory and best practices to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the young people they serve in mental health practice.

In this 2-hour continuing education webinar for therapists, Shira Sameroff, LCSW will cover topics including:

  • building authentic therapuetic relationships based in mutual trust and respect
  • seeing, reflecting, and bolstering young peoples’ strengths
  • understanding the impact of common challenges and systems of oppression on young peoples’ lives
  • supporting young people to engage in social change
  • importance of and tools for self-awareness as a practitioner

Participants will gain valuable insights and practical strategies to effectively engage with young clients in a way that honors their unique experiences, strengths, and perspectives.

This introductory continuing education webinar is designed to help mental health professionals:

  1. Explain at least two components of a strength-based approach to working with youth in therapy.
  2. Describe how to build authentic therapeutic relationships with youth in therapy.
  3. Identify common challenges, including systemic oppression, faced by youth.

Statement of program material's accuracy, utility, and risks: This program draws on and integrates foundational principles from methods and interventions including Psychodynamic Therapy, Family Therapy, Social Groupwork, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ecopsychology, and Compassion-Focused Therapy. The course material aligns with ethical guidelines set forth by major counseling associations. A significant body of research support the efficacy of these approaches when used appropriately in fostering individual, group, and societal growth and healing. There are no known contraindications for diverse populations.

How the Web Conference Works

Before the scheduled event, all registered attendees will be sent a reminder email from GoodTherapy with specific instructions on how to log in to the webinar, as well as links to optional handout materials if applicable.

To attend the event, registered attendees will log in to the Microsoft Teams web conference center using a computer or device with internet access and/or call into the teleconference line on a phone. Attendees will be able to submit questions during the webinar via text chat in the Microsoft Teams web conference center and will be able to see the live streaming video and/or document sharing. 

At the conclusion of this event, participants will receive an email with information about how to request a CE certificate in your GoodTherapy Account. To confirm attendance, participants must enter the start code and end code announced at the beginning and end of the live presentation. Participants will also be prompted to complete an online survey evaluating the event. Participants will need to complete this online survey within six days after the event. Once completed, participants will be able to download a copy of their CE certificate right away by logging in to their GoodTherapy account.

Meet the Presenter

Shira Sameroff, LCSW

Shira Sameroff, LCSW

Shira Sameroff is a licensed clinical social worker. She has decades of practice with people of diverse identities, ages, and life stories in a wide array of settings. Her professional roles have included therapy, supervision, professional development, continuing education and college teaching, coaching, community organizing, transformative decluttering and a decade and a half in leadership in a beloved community-based social work agency.

Shira offers professional development for individuals and organizations around themes including shame, group facilitation, supervision, giving and receiving feedback, empowering practice with youth, tending to self as a practitioner and trauma-informed and oppression-informed therapy. She weaves together a range of therapeutic healing including Internal Family Systems Therapy, Hakomi, and other somatic, nature-based, and anti-oppressive practices to enable individual and collective healing transformation.
